Math Recovery - Ms. Farbman

What is Math Recovery?

Like the well-known and highly successful Reading Recovery program, Mathematics Recovery (MR) is an early intervention program designed to correct the mathematical deficiencies of low achieving first graders before they experience repeated failure and develop strong negative attitudes regarding mathematics .

This program is relatively new to the United States having been developed by mathematics educators in Australia and the US. The program draws extensively on the research into children's understanding of mathematical concepts and strategies for teaching that help to correct students deficiencies. It involves an intensive individualized program for a ten to fifteen week period in which a teacher, who has received extensive professional development, works with individual students for 30 minutes daily. Each session is videotaped to promote teacher reflection and aid in planning next lessons. Students are continually engaged in new learning activities in order to further extend their knowledge. MR teaching emphasizes on-going assessment through careful observation, analysis of students' current knowledge and strategies, and selection of learning activities closely correlated to their current knowledge.
